Dr.A.Devasagayam, born on Jaffna, Colombo, had his early school life in Colombo. He joined the school of medicine in Government Stanley Medical School, Madras.
After qualifying LMP, he joined the army and served till the end of the Second World War. He retired as SN of the “Major” of the army and joined as one of the medical officers in M/s. Amalgamation group of companies - consisting of engineering and non-engineering companies on Madras (Simpsons, Addisons, India Pistons or some of the engineering industries, Higgin Bothams - booksellers; George Oakes & Speed away or some of the engineering products sellers and other companies such as Midas Advertising & Co., etc.).
And he represented the Society for the Study of Industrial Medicine in India at the South East Asian conference held at Japan & presented a paper.
He is one of the stalwarts of the founders of the Tamil Nadu Pradesh of the Society for the Study of Industrial Medicine. Along with Dr. C.K. Ramachandran, Dr. A. Peters, Dr.VNC Rao, and Prof. Arjundas. He held all the posts at the state and national level of the association. After nearly two decades of service, he retired as chief medical officer of the Amalgamation group.
His humane approach to the workers and their families earned him popularity among the working population. He was an honorary medical officer of an orphanage, which was run by a Christian mission, which was then present at the slum area opposite to the Transport building.
He showed keen interest in sports, the scout movement, and in St. Thomas Ambulance Association. After retirement, he was the medical officer of Stedford Hospital, Ambattur for some time.
