| Dr. C.K. Ramchandar embarked on his career in Occupational Medicine as Factory Medical Officer, M/s E.I.D Parry (India) Ltd Ranipet from 1948 to 1975 and continued as Medical Advisor to the E.I.D Group till his passing away in 1980. He was the founder member of the Indian Association of Occupational Health which was known then as Society for Study of Industrial Medicine.
Dr. C.K. Ramchandar travelled to U.K. in 1955 to study the medical centres which provided service to industrial workers and later in 1968 travelled extensively in Europe, Eastern Countries and was invited as guest lecturer to Occupational centres in various countries in Europe and Asia. He was the Secretary General for the 2nd Asian Conference on Occupational Health held at Calcutta in 1959. He was an active member, International Permanent Commission of Occupational Health from 1958. To his credit he has presented several scientific papers on various aspects of occupational health, hazards, pollution, environment and he always encouraged his colleagues to present papers. |

Dr. C.K. Ramchandar was Chairman, Occupational and Health Service committee of Indian Council of Medical Research, Delhi. His greatest contribution to this specialty was bringing awareness to other disciplines of medicine the importance of occupational health and environmental pollution. His dream was a postgraduate training course in Occupational Medicine. His favourite saying was “In the ultimate analysis it is the man who produces and not the machine and that man’s health care is a priority of Employers, including worker family health care programme” . He brought Occupational Health specialty close to the management, various Government agencies, private agencies, and teaching institutions. He travelled extensively in India visiting various industries, medical departments of state and central governments.
Dr. C.K. Ramchandar was the founder member of National Society of Health Administrators, Bangalore. His manuscripts, his collection of articles and journals which were very precious to him have been donated to National Institute of Occupational Health, Bangalore. His passionate commitment and involvement in Occupational Health is still remembered by all those who knew him.
In his honour every year the Indian Association of Occupational Health organizes Dr. C.K. Ramchandar Memorial Award and Oration during the National conference and in the State level to the best maintained Medical Centre at the site of work.
